Homily: Dorothy Day, Apostle of the Industrial Age $1.18

On her last visit to Pittsburgh, Dorothy Day asked me, as we left the Mass liturgy completing a retreat, if I would give the homily at her funeral. I agree of course, should this be possible, although not thinking that it would. Nevertheless, my mind wandered back at times to this invitation and I pondered what one might appropriately say on that occasion. When Dorothy died (Nov. 30, 1980), I was not able to go to her funeral. Instead, as I thought of her, I filled in the sketch that had been forming in my mind and published it in "The Pittsburgh Catholic". This is the text presented here. I realize that it is not a homily, but an appreciation, and so I intend it. Fr. John J. Hugo.
